Who For? Age 14-18.
What is Script Analysis? Understanding how to read and interpret a script can be difficult. It is also one of the most important parts of acting. Commas, periods, and ellipses can all drastically change a reading. Learn how to dig into and read a script, discover subtext, and how to lift the words, characters, and meaning off the page and bring them to life.
Why is it helpful: Script analysis is one of the best classes an actor, writer, or director can take. Learning how to read and interpret a script is vital to performing and understanding the play you're performing in or producing.
What will we do? We will break down a variety of scripts and scenes from plays, films, TV shows, and monologues. Digging into the character background, the meaning behind the punctuation, what the subtext could be, and the context of the piece.
Highlights: Don't be scared by the theoretical aspect of this class; it will be a very practical, movement-oriented class as well. We will act out the scenes and see how the script works in a performance aspect.
Why is understanding a script important?
Does punctuation matter? And what makes a comma, vs a period in a sentence, important is how we say and understand it.
Understanding what subtext is and how to use it in our performance.
Understanding the elements of a script and character development outside of the scene, eg, where were they before the scene? What would their favorite food be?
Internal vs external character thoughts: What do they really think of what is happening in the scene, and is what the character is outwardly showing the same as what they are thinking in their head?
Is the character saying what they really mean in this scene?
Ability to assess whether a line can be paraphrased slightly from what’s written, or if it should remain as is.
A knowledge of who Chekov is, and why his plays are still studied for subtext.
Ability to point out subtext examples in movies/tv shows/plays they have seen.
Confidence in backing up their own artistic interpretation of the text, and finding evidence in the script for it.
Knowledge of writing that is rich and has a lot of depth, vs writing that is surface level, and which may require more artistic interpretation from the performer.
Why the ability to critically analyse a script is vital for acting, writing and directing
