What is Show Choir 1? Ages 10-14. Teaches kids to sing and perform a variety of musical theatre and popular songs, with an emphasis on vocal health and student-led musical exploration.
Why This Program? I want my students to feel empowered to suggest songs or musical genres they enjoy, and have a say in what type of music we learn. I also heavily focus on combining my music teacher background and classical voice training to make it a class where they not only learn new songs and genres, but also learn background about the music, learn some music theory, and vocal anatomy. You will develop the skills to approach learning and performing songs in this fun and safe educational environment.
Why is it helpful: Show choir is such a fun and low-pressure way to experience singing with other people, and to step out of our comfort zone. Group singing takes the pressure off new or shy singers and gets us used to singing in front of others.
What will we do? We always start classes with a warm-up, then each week we learn new vocal techniques and anatomy. We break down our song into parts and work on it section by section, and then put it all together. Learn how to hold a microphone, get used to what a music score looks like, and add simple choreography with our songs.
Highlights: This fall, with my show choir 1 kids, we've used Bicycle Made for Two as a warm-up (as requested by the kids), learned Mama Mia by ABBA, Vampire by Olivia Rodrigo (clean version), and just started learning a new jazz song (including some history on jazz as a genre).
*The courses are progressive and adaptable, meaning whether you are new to the class or are repeating it, you will always have new information and new material to work on and grow from.
